생명체를 구성하는 고분자는 매우 복잡한 구조를 가지고 있지만 구조가 정확하게 제어되어 적합한 구조와 기능을 수행한다. 외부의 환경 조건 또는 자극을 감지하고(sense) 적절한 반응(react)도 할 수 있는데 이와 같은 기능을 가지는 재료를 스마트 소재(smart materials) 또는 지능형 소재(intelligent materials)라고 한다.
휴대용 디지털 기기를 이용하여 자신의 건강상태를 진단할 수 있는 작은 소재, 암세포의 위치를 추적하고 정확하게 약을 전달할 수 있는 재료, 손실된 조직의 재생을 도와줄 수 있는 재료, 환경에 따라 무늬와 색을 변화시키는 의복용 재료 등이 모두 스마트 재료가 열어주는 세상이다.
본 실험실은 무한한 상상력과 관찰력으로 생명체의 기능과 역할을 이해하고 이러한 이해를 바탕으로 새로운 나노크기의 지능형 유기소재(섬유, 플라스틱, 필름, 하이드로 겔 등)를 설계,합성하며 응용제품에 대한 연구를 진행하고 있다.
